And as the years roll by, they are remarkably easy to recollect through the haze. For children who want, or need, a means of escape, the things that can facilitate it are often grasped most tightly. They also provided a kind of psychological freedom. Perhaps more than sports day glory or a first kiss, the hours spent in deep dark focus in front of a TV are among those I remember most vividly, because games offered immediate and exotic horizons to chase. In my difficult early teenage years I played a lot of what were laughably called computer games. ![]()
